Sep-03-2024
Recently, the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, opened up about some of the decisions he’s made regarding game choices throughout his career. While acknowledging certain missteps, he expressed no regrets about not securing exclusivity for titles like Destiny and Guitar Hero.
During a panel session at PAX West, Spencer reflected on Bungie's 2014 title, sharing insights on why Microsoft's decision was to not sign Destiny as an exclusive for Xbox. He noted that it wasn't until the game’s first expansion, The House of Wolves, that he genuinely began to appreciate the game's potential, admitting he had doubts before its release through Activision.
Spencer conveyed a mix of nostalgia and introspection when talking about Destiny. He mentioned the discussions held within Microsoft about the possibility of signing the game, ultimately recognizing that it was a significant venture that evolved remarkably over time. He reflected on the journey, acknowledging how it represented a fascinating chapter in the development efforts of Bungie.
The unity between Bungie and Microsoft was highlighted as a meaningful aspect of Spencer’s early career. Working in close quarters with Bungie's founders taught him invaluable lessons about game development and innovation.
He also shared an anecdote regarding Guitar Hero, recalling the early pitch by the team led by Alex Rigopulos. The idea of using plastic guitars that plugged into consoles seemed outlandish to him at the time, prompting skepticism about its potential success. However, he humorously admitted that it turned out to be a great game.
Despite the decisions not to pursue certain projects that subsequently thrived, Spencer focused on the positivity of looking ahead. He stated that he doesn't dwell on regrets, preferring instead to appreciate the achievements of those involved, especially the impactful contributions made by the team at Bungie.
